Learning modules
Deep-dive walkthroughs for every topic at this level.
Track Overview
The Test Automation Lead track teaches you to lead testing initiatives from a business and strategy perspective. You'll learn to craft automation pyramids aligned with risk, make tool selections based on objective criteria, calculate ROI to justify investment, build dashboards that tell the story of test health, and mentor teams through structured programs. This track prepares you to lead automation efforts across teams, make strategic decisions about tooling and priorities, and communicate test value in business language.
You'll move beyond individual contribution to enabling teams. You'll learn to think about testing as a strategic asset, make data-driven decisions about where to invest automation effort, and build cultures where testing is valued and sustainable.
Prerequisites
- Senior Automation Engineer experience: Completed senior track or 3+ years leading test automation on production systems.
- Technical expertise: Deep knowledge of frameworks, CI/CD, and testing patterns. You can make informed tool selections.
- Team experience: You've worked with other automation engineers and provided feedback on their work.
- Business acumen: Understanding of feature velocity, release cycles, and how testing impacts release confidence.
- Communication skills: Comfortable presenting to non-technical stakeholders and translating metrics into business value.
- Project management basics: Comfortable with estimation, backlog management, and timelines.
Learning Path
Master lead-level strategy and team skills through these modules:
| Phase | Modules | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy | Test Strategy & Planning | Automation pyramids, risk-based prioritisation, effort estimation. |
| Business | ROI & Reporting | Cost/benefit, defect escape analysis, translating metrics for business. |
| Decision Making | Tool Selection | Weighted scoring, proof-of-value, phased migration strategies. |
| Leadership | Team Mentoring | Pair programming, skills ladders, onboarding, code review culture. |
| Visibility | Metrics & Dashboards | Leading vs lagging indicators, DORA metrics, avoiding metric gaming. |
Capstone Project: Test Automation Strategy & Business Case
Develop a comprehensive automation strategy and ROI case for an enterprise client.
You'll demonstrate lead-level strategic thinking across all key areas:
- Conduct risk analysis and design an automation pyramid aligned with release cadence
- Research tool options and create a weighted scoring matrix
- Calculate 3-year ROI including team ramp time, tool costs, and defect escape reduction
- Propose a phased implementation roadmap with success metrics
- Build a team mentoring program with skills progression framework
- Design dashboards showing DORA metrics, test health, and business impact
- Create a compelling executive summary for stakeholders
Outcome: A complete business strategy document and presentation. You'll demonstrate the ability to think like a leader—balancing technical excellence with business reality, making data-driven decisions, and building high-performing teams.
Time Commitment
8–10 weeks at 10–12 hours per week. Much of this time is reading industry research, studying case studies, and working through business scenarios. You'll apply concepts to your current role and team.
